Escape presents an unexpected fusion between the cello and the accordion that transports us off into an unusual sound environment, expanding and refreshing the tones and timbres in the classical music universe.
The musical involvement is further enhanced by the remarkable symbiosis achieved by the Stretto Duo, Catherine Strynckx (cello) and Paulo Jorge Ferreira (accordion), who both draw on their extensive experiences in the performance field, and especially in chamber music.
Escape is the first album by Stretto Duo, the only professional formation in Portugal consisting of cello and accordion. The group debuted in 2010 and has since performed around sixty concerts over their twelve-year career. This period of coexistence and joint collaboration between Catherine Strynckx and Paulo Jorge Ferreira was essential to the maturing of their repertoire and musical symbiosis, especially as performers. The recording of this album represents a defining moment in the duo’s phase of maturity and the opportunity to convey the potentials of this instrumental combination known to a wider audience.
The repertoire, carefully selected for this recording from the around eighty works known to have been written for these two instruments, brings together five pieces of great quality and aesthetic diversity, authored by five composers of different nationalities but all still active and internationally acclaimed.
